Cultural and touristic programmes

Dear Conference Guests,

Whether this is your first time visiting or you are a returning visitor of Budapest, we encourage you to extend your stay with a couple of days for acquainting with Hungary. We recommend our unique pre- or post-conference tours for you. Beyond the introduction to some of our historical places you can experience typical Hungarian products “Hungaricums” and specialties of the Hungarian gastronomy.

We offer single day trips as a pre- or post-conference tour. Experience swimming in the largest fresh water lake in Europe, the famous Lake Balaton, walk in the footsteps of the Hungarian kings in different towns or gain insight into rural life of a typical Hungarian village with native animals and horse show. It is special experience for any IT users to visit the Unique Collection of Computer History and the imposant University Library in the “town of the sunshine”, Szeged.

Having the decision on the detailed final professional programmes we also have completed the optional cultural and touristic programmes. You of course can send your application to any of the programmes even if your registration to the conference is already completed. You can register by e-mail: or by phone:+36 30 2697761.

“Early birds” are encouraged to take part in the programmes on August 30 and 31. These days the programmes start from Hotel Gellért, where pre-registration will be open. Special agreement on pick-up can be agreed by using the above mentioned e-mail address for those staying in other hotels.

All of the tours are organised with English speaking guide and coaches. The Budapest tours will last 3 hours, the tours to the countryside 8-10 hours (lunch included).

Beyond the described programmes the PCO of course will provide you with all travel information in the city (selling tickets for the public transportation) find and advise what’s on in Budapest and which are the recommended internationally recognised restaurants or where local people eat or even order you taxi.

Sightseeing in Budapest

Exploring Budapest

Crossing the Danube on the Liberty Bridge, passing the outstanding sites on the Small Ring (Market Hall, National Museum, main churches).

Visit the Heroes Square, millennium monument and gallery of the Hungarian kings: short stop, proceed via the City Park: Gundel restaurant, Zoo and Széchenyi spa, Vajdahunyad castle.

Next we are driving alongside the elegant Andrássy Avenue (part of the world heritage) passing numerous great palaces and museums. The tour continues towards the beautiful art noveau style Gresham Palace (now Fours Season hotel), Acadamy of Science on the Széchenyi Square and we are crossing the river Danube via the first stone bridge, Chain bridge to the Buda side and arriving at the medieval Castle district.

Walking tour in „the old town” to the Holy Trinity square, Mátyás church (visit), Fishermen’s bastion. Afterwards drive to the top of the Gellért hill stop at the Citadella and enjoying the panoramic view of the entire city.

Religious Diversity Tour

Short introduction to the history of the Hungarian protestant churches, “Lutheran island” (it fits with the first underground line on the continent) visit of the church, museum and the secondary school, the Reformed church on Calvin Square, interior visit.

Jewish heritage: visit the largest reformed synagogue in Central Europe “the Dohány temple”: interior of the synagogue, old cemetery, Holocaust memorial. By walking in the Jewish district, we will see other synagogues, memorials, kosher shops and so called “ruined pubs”.

St. Stephen Basilica is the largest and the highest Roman Catholic Church in Budapest. We are visiting this imposing holy place including the chapel of the “holy right” holding the relic of the first Hungarian catholic king St. Stephen, the founder of the Hungarian state (1000 a.c.)

Budapest, the City of Spas

Did you know that Hungary has the second largest reserves of surface thermal water in the world (after Iceland)? The hot springs on the Buda side were already used by the Celts and the Romans. We organised a trip for you to visit several spas of the capital: Lukács Bath (inside visit), Király Bath, Rác (Serb), Rudas Bathes and finally have a bath in one of our most famous thermal spas, the Széchenyi spa.

Danube Bend Tour

Excursion into the Hungarian history: Danube Bend: Visegrád – Szentendre

Travelling alongside the river Danube through little villages we arrive to Visegrád which is located in the Danube Bend. From the 750 year old royal fortress on the Visegrád hilltop we can enjoy a fascinating panorama on the Danube valley.

Visiting by return the artists’ town of Szentendre. It is a small baroques style town on Roman and medieval ruins. The town has got narrow and winding streets and a very unique atmosphere. There are 16 different museums of Hungarian artists who lived here in artist’ colony. We visit the world famous Margit Kovács Ceramic Museum, her collection is outstanding and unique. Dinner in a local restaurant.

Lake Balaton Tour

Balaton – Central Europe’s largest fresh water lake

Departure to Tihany peninsula, the most picturesque point of the lake Balaton. Visit the 11th century abbey church and its museum displaying the oldest written document in Hungarian language.

Proceed to Balatonfüred, the elegant spa, walking in the 19th century centre of the town.

Visit to Veszprém, county and bishop seat, the town of the Hungarian queens. Walking in the medieval castle area visiting the monument of Saint Stephen, the first Hungarian king, founder of our state (a.c.1000)

Lunch in a local restaurant.

Departure to Herend (1826) the 189 years old Porcelain Manufactory demonstrating the different processes of the porcelain productions.

Visit the manufactory and either to admire the unique objects in the museum or to produce (and take with you) your own souvenir from porcelain.

Great Hungarian Plain

Culture, Tradition, Innovation

Departure to Kecskemét (85km), tasting Hungary’s famous “Barack pálinka” (apricot brandy).

Walking tour around the main square Kodály Institution, catholic, Lutheran, reformed churches, Jewish synagogue, City Hall, the pearl of the Hungarian style art nouveau.

Driving to Szeged located at the “blond” Tisza river bank. Visiting the town Library (medieval collection), the unique Museum if IT (opened in 2013) demonstrating the “matusalems” of computer techniques including the devices developed in the former communist countries during the co-come period. Quick lunch. Proceed to the 21th century library of the Szeged Science University. Walking tour in the art nouveau style down town awarded by Europe Nostra Prize.

Driving back, enroot stop in a mansion, horse show, learning about other native Hungarian animals. Dinner includes the tasting of “lángos” (scone, traditionally with sour cream and cheese on it) and local wine.
